Voice of the Vols’ Bob Kesling Bids Farewell, Reflects on Iconic Career with Tennessee Sports.

After decades behind the microphone, Bob Kesling, the iconic “Voice of the Vols,” has officially announced his retirement, bringing an end to an era of Tennessee Volunteers sports broadcasts. Kesling’s departure marks the conclusion of a remarkable career that spanned over three decades, where his distinctive voice became synonymous with University of Tennessee athletics, particularly football and basketball.

Kesling’s journey began in 1999, when he took over as the play-by-play announcer for the Tennessee Volunteers. His voice quickly became familiar to fans across the state and beyond, guiding listeners through the highs and lows of Tennessee’s athletic landscape. Known for his crisp delivery, deep knowledge of the game, and unwavering enthusiasm, Kesling’s broadcasts made him a beloved figure among Vols fans. His deep connection to Tennessee, both as a broadcaster and as a fan, made him a key part of the Volunteers’ tradition.

Reflecting on his career, Kesling expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the voice of a program with such a rich history. “It’s been an incredible ride,” Kesling said in a recent interview. “To be part of such a storied program, with so many great players and coaches, and to be able to bring the excitement of Tennessee athletics to fans, has been a true honor.”

Kesling’s tenure included countless unforgettable moments. He was there for Tennessee’s triumphs, including the 1998 National Championship in football, the 2008 SEC Championship in basketball, and many thrilling regular-season victories that kept fans on the edge of their seats. His voice echoed through some of the most dramatic and emotional moments in Tennessee sports history, from game-winning touchdowns to buzzer-beating shots.

One of Kesling’s most memorable calls came during Tennessee’s victory over Florida in 2016, when the Vols ended a 12-year losing streak against the Gators. As the clock ticked down and the Volunteers secured a 38-28 win, Kesling’s enthusiastic, “Touchdown, Tennessee!” became a signature moment for Vols fans.

Off the air, Kesling’s impact was just as profound. His approachable, down-to-earth personality made him a favorite among colleagues and fans alike. He was more than just the voice of the Vols—he was a true ambassador for the program. His passion for Tennessee’s athletes, coaches, and fans shone through in every broadcast, and his dedication to his craft was evident in his meticulous preparation and attention to detail.

In his farewell address, Kesling highlighted the many people who helped shape his career. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside so many incredible people—coaches, players, and fellow broadcasters. But most importantly, I’ve been blessed to work with the fans. The Tennessee fan base is unlike any other, and their passion and loyalty have made my job a joy every day.”

Though his voice will no longer be heard on game days, Kesling’s legacy is secure. He leaves behind a deep and lasting imprint on Tennessee sports, and his impact will be felt for years to come. The University of Tennessee will forever remember Bob Kesling as the broadcaster who helped define its golden era of athletics, bringing countless unforgettable moments into the homes of fans across the nation.

As he steps away from the microphone, Kesling is looking forward to spending more time with his family, enjoying the game from a fan’s perspective, and reflecting on a career that was as much about passion and dedication as it was about sport.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky to have had the best job in the world,” Kesling said. “I’m so thankful for all the memories and experiences. Now it’s time to pass the torch and let someone else take over the great tradition of being the Voice of the Vols.”
