In a surprising turn of events, 2026 4-star EDGE prospect Jake Kreul has flipped his commitment to Ohio State, choosing the Buckeyes over a host of elite programs, including the University of Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, and several others. Kreul, who had initially committed to Oklahoma earlier in the recruiting process, has now shifted his focus toward Columbus, making the announcement on social media and sending shockwaves through the recruiting world.

Kreul, a highly coveted defensive playmaker out of Wisconsin, has been on the radar of major college programs for quite some time. With a blend of size, speed, and power, the 6’5”, 245-pound EDGE rusher has the potential to be a dominant force on the defensive line at the next level. His versatility and ability to disrupt the quarterback have made him one of the top defensive prospects in the 2026 class. Schools from across the country have been clamoring to secure his commitment, but it’s Ohio State that emerged victorious in the battle for his services.

The flip to Ohio State is a major win for head coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who have been building an elite defense in recent years. Kreul’s decision to join the Buckeyes provides a significant boost to their already impressive recruiting class and adds another premier pass rusher to their defensive unit. Ohio State has a long history of producing top-tier NFL talent, and Kreul’s commitment further solidifies the program’s reputation as a powerhouse in developing defensive talent.

For Oklahoma, the flip is undoubtedly a tough blow. The Sooners had been considered one of the favorites to land Kreul due to their early commitment and consistent communication with him throughout his recruitment. Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables and defensive staff had been working hard to sell Kreul on the idea of playing in their aggressive defensive system, but ultimately, the lure of Ohio State’s success and defensive pedigree proved too strong.

Kreul’s decision to flip to Ohio State was influenced by several factors. During his visits to Columbus, he developed a strong relationship with the coaching staff and felt confident in the program’s vision for his future. The chance to play in the Big Ten, against top-tier competition, and the opportunity to compete for national championships played a pivotal role in his decision. Additionally, the environment at Ohio State, with its fan base, facilities, and commitment to excellence, was a major selling point.

While Oklahoma and other top programs will certainly regroup and continue to recruit future prospects, the flip of Kreul to Ohio State marks a major victory for the Buckeyes. His commitment adds to an already impressive recruiting haul for Ohio State and solidifies their place as one of the nation’s elite programs. As Kreul continues to develop over the next couple of years, his impact at Ohio State will be one to watch, as he is expected to be a key piece of the Buckeyes’ defense for years to come.
