In a significant shift within the 2026 college football recruiting landscape, five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin has decommitted from the University of Southern California (USC) and announced his commitment to West Virginia University (WVU). Griffin, previously ranked as the No. 2 linebacker and No. 22 overall prospect in the 2026 class by 247Sports Composite Rankings, made his decision public on May 15, 2025. ([Bleacher Report][1])

Griffin, a standout from Gainesville High School in Georgia, had initially committed to USC in July 2024. However, he reopened his recruitment in May 2025, citing a desire to explore other opportunities and take official visits to programs closer to home. During his junior season, Griffin recorded 29 solo tackles and 13 tackles for loss, despite being limited to eight games due to injury. ([Fan Recap][2], [AJC][3])

West Virginia’s recruitment of Griffin was led by head coach Neal Brown and defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley, who emphasized the program’s commitment to defensive excellence and player development. Griffin’s versatility as a linebacker, capable of both pass coverage and run defense, aligns well with WVU’s defensive schemes.

Griffin’s commitment is a significant boost for West Virginia’s 2026 recruiting class, marking one of the highest-rated commitments in recent program history. His decision also reflects a broader trend of top-tier recruits considering programs outside the traditional powerhouses, seeking opportunities for immediate impact and personalized development.

As Griffin prepares for his senior season at Gainesville High, his focus will be on continuing to refine his skills and lead his team to success. His commitment to West Virginia signals a promising future for both the player and the Mountaineers’ football program.
