In a surprising turn of events, standout guard Treysen Eaglestaff has committed to West Virginia University, reversing his earlier decision to join the USC Trojans. This unexpected move has stirred discussions across the college basketball community, highlighting the dynamic nature of the transfer portal.

Eaglestaff, a 6-foot-6, 190-pound guard from Bismarck, North Dakota, made headlines during the 2024–25 season with the University of North Dakota. Averaging 18.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, he showcased his scoring prowess with notable performances, including a 40-point game against Alabama and a record-setting 51-point effort in the Summit League tournament quarterfinals .([West Virginia University Athletics][1], [Wikipedia][2])

Initially, Eaglestaff committed to South Carolina on March 30, choosing the Gamecocks over programs like Kentucky, Kansas, and Iowa. However, he decommitted on April 16, just over two weeks later, and subsequently pledged to West Virginia .([WVSports][3])

West Virginia’s new head coach, Ross Hodge, expressed enthusiasm about the addition. “We are happy to have Treysen join the West Virginia basketball program,” Hodge said. “Treysen has the ability to play multiple positions, and his size and skill are a great combination for us.” Hodge, who previously coached at North Texas, is actively rebuilding the Mountaineers’ roster, and Eaglestaff’s commitment marks a significant step in that process .([SI][4], [West Virginia University Athletics][1], [The Smoking Musket][5])

Eaglestaff’s decision to join West Virginia adds a high-caliber scorer to the team’s lineup. His ability to perform under pressure and contribute significantly on offense is expected to bolster the Mountaineers’ competitiveness in the Big 12 Conference. With one season of eligibility remaining, Eaglestaff aims to make a substantial impact in Morgantown.

This commitment also reflects the evolving landscape of college basketball, where players are increasingly making swift decisions in the transfer portal to align with programs that best fit their aspirations and playing style. For West Virginia, securing a player of Eaglestaff’s caliber underscores the program’s commitment to excellence and its appeal to top-tier talent.

As the Mountaineers prepare for the upcoming season, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see how Eaglestaff integrates into the team’s dynamics and contributes to their pursuit of success in the Big 12.
