- As the Purdue Boilermakers prepare for another high-stakes college basketball season, head coach Matt Painter is making one thing clear—nothing will be handed out to his new recruits. With a talented incoming freshman class, including standout names like Kanon Catchings, Gicarri Harris, Daniel Jacobsen, and Raleigh Burgess, the pressure to perform is real. But Painter isn’t softening his stance.
“These guys are talented, no doubt,” Painter said in a recent media session. “But talent alone doesn’t get you on the court at Purdue. You’ve got to earn your stripes—every day, in practice, in film sessions, and in how you carry yourself.”
Painter has long built his program on discipline, player development, and chemistry. While some top programs lean heavily on the transfer portal for instant impact, Painter maintains a different philosophy. He’s committed to developing players over time, giving freshmen the tools to grow into key roles.
“We’re not in the business of selling minutes or promising stardom,” he emphasized. “You play because you’re ready—physically, mentally, and emotionally. These freshmen will have opportunities, but they have to seize them.”
Veteran leadership, including Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer, will provide the backbone of the team as the newcomers adjust to the collegiate level. Painter is confident that the experience of older players will set the standard.
“Watching guys like Braden and Fletcher—how they approach the game, how they lead—that’s the model,” Painter said. “Our freshmen are walking into a program that values accountability and toughness.”
Painter isn’t dismissive of the transfer portal, but he views it as a tool of necessity, not preference. He’d rather build a team over years than assemble one overnight.
“That’s how we’ve always done it here,” Painter said. “It’s not flashy, but it works. And when these freshmen embrace the grind, they’ll find their place.”
