Iowa State has finalized its 2025 non-conference football schedule, and it’s clear the Cyclones aren’t shying away from a challenge. With matchups now confirmed against Mississippi State from the SEC and Purdue from the Big Ten, Matt Campbell’s squad is set to face one of the tougher non-league slates in the country.

The Cyclones will open the season at Jack Trice Stadium with a visit from Mississippi State. The Bulldogs, known for their SEC toughness and dynamic playmakers, will provide an early test for Iowa State’s offense and defense alike. This will mark just the second meeting between the two programs, setting the stage for an exciting early-season clash that could have implications beyond just the win-loss column.

The second marquee non-conference game will see Iowa State travel to West Lafayette to face Purdue. A familiar foe from the Big Ten, the Boilermakers bring a pass-heavy attack and gritty Big Ten style that promises another physical showdown. It will be the first meeting between the schools since 2012, adding an extra layer of intrigue to this regional matchup.

Sandwiched between those two power-conference opponents is a home game against in-state FCS opponent Northern Iowa. While not carrying the same national name recognition, the Panthers have a history of being a thorn in the side of major Iowa programs. Their physical defense and disciplined playstyle make them a dangerous opponent if overlooked.

Altogether, the non-conference schedule offers a balanced but demanding start to Iowa State’s 2025 campaign. With SEC speed, Big Ten physicality, and an always-fiery in-state battle, the early season will serve as a proving ground for a Cyclone team looking to climb back into Big 12 title contention.

Coach Campbell has never been one to duck competition, and this schedule reinforces that philosophy. It’s a gauntlet that will test depth, resilience, and execution — all before the Big 12 grind begins. Fans should circle these dates now; win or lose, the Cyclones’ non-conference slate promises entertainment, stakes, and national attention.
