Lock Him In: Cam Spencer Has Earned His Spot on the Grizzlies’ Roster.

The Memphis Grizzlies have a clear decision to make this offseason—and it shouldn’t require much thought. Cam Spencer, the undrafted sharpshooter out of UConn, has done more than enough to warrant a standard NBA contract. After flashing his value throughout Summer League and carrying that momentum into training camp and preseason, Spencer looks like a seamless fit for a Grizzlies squad in need of depth, shooting, and smart basketball.

Spencer’s basketball IQ is off the charts, and his game is built on fundamentals, effort, and efficiency. He doesn’t force shots, makes the right reads, and plays within the system—all traits head coach Taylor Jenkins prizes. What makes him stand out, however, is his elite shooting ability. Whether spotting up from deep, coming off screens, or spacing the floor in transition, Spencer has the kind of shot that demands defensive attention.

On a Memphis team that struggled mightily with consistency and spacing last season due to injuries and roster turnover, Spencer brings instant offense and stability. He’s not just a shooter either—his tenacity on defense and willingness to do the dirty work make him an ideal role player, especially for a team trying to reestablish its identity.

Beyond the stats, Spencer has something you can’t teach: a winner’s mentality. Coming off an NCAA championship at UConn, he’s used to playing under pressure and in big moments. That kind of experience, maturity, and poise is a valuable commodity for a young Grizzlies core looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 campaign.

The Grizzlies have an open lane to reward Spencer’s effort and upside with a standard NBA deal. Two-way contracts are for players still proving they belong. Spencer has already done that. Giving him a full roster spot not only solidifies the bench rotation but sends a clear message to the rest of the locker room—production, work ethic, and readiness matter more than draft position.

For a franchise that prides itself on player development and toughness, locking in Cam Spencer is the next logical step
