Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal isn’t known for sugarcoating things — and he certainly didn’t hold back when discussing his expectations for the Hurricanes’ defense heading into the 2025 season. During a recent press conference following spring practices, Cristobal delivered a confident and direct assessment: “This defense is built to dominate.”
Cristobal, now in his fourth year at the helm, has made it clear that the time for rebuilding is over. After several seasons of inconsistency and growing pains, he believes the 2025 defense reflects the toughness, speed, and discipline that he’s been working tirelessly to instill in the program.
“We’ve added depth at every level,” Cristobal said. “From the defensive line to the secondary, we’ve got guys who can fly around, hit, and execute. This isn’t just about talent — it’s about attitude and culture.”
A major reason for his optimism is the return of several key veterans, including All-ACC linebacker Jaheim Brown and defensive tackle Zion Walker, both of whom turned down the NFL Draft to return for another season. The defense also boasts a highly touted crop of underclassmen, including sophomore edge rusher Malik Jefferson, who Cristobal described as “an absolute game-wrecker.”
The Hurricanes have placed a strong emphasis on fundamentals and situational defense throughout the offseason. Defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, entering his second year with the program, has implemented more aggressive schemes that favor pressure and versatility — two areas where Miami struggled in recent years.
“We’re not here to bend and hope we don’t break,” Cristobal said. “We’re going to dictate tempo, force mistakes, and set the tone.”
