The Memphis Grizzlies have shown a keen interest in bolstering their frontcourt by targeting Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green during the 2023 NBA free agency period. Despite the intense rivalry between the two teams, the Grizzlies viewed Green’s defensive prowess and veteran leadership as valuable assets to complement their young core.

Reports indicate that the Grizzlies extended a substantial offer to Green, proposing a three-year, $105 million contract. This deal was notably more lucrative than the four-year, $100 million contract Green ultimately signed to remain with the Warriors. The financial advantage was further amplified by Tennessee’s lack of state income tax, potentially offering Green significant savings compared to California’s higher tax rates .

Green acknowledged the seriousness of Memphis’s offer, revealing that he contemplated the move and even informed Warriors teammates Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson of his intentions. However, his deep-rooted connection with Golden State and the team’s culture ultimately influenced his decision to stay .

The Grizzlies’ pursuit of Green underscores their commitment to adding experienced, defensive-minded players to their roster. While the acquisition didn’t materialize, it highlights Memphis’s strategic approach to team building and their willingness to make bold moves to enhance their competitiveness in the Western Conference.

As the Grizzlies continue to develop their young talent, the team’s front office remains proactive in exploring opportunities to strengthen the roster, signaling their ambition to ascend in the NBA hierarchy.
