Speaking candidly in an interview, Johnson reflected on the high expectations that come with coaching one of the most storied programs in college baseball—and why he embraces them fully.

Since taking over the program in 2021, Johnson has continued to elevate LSU’s national profile. Under his leadership, the Tigers captured the 2023 NCAA National Championship, further cementing LSU’s reputation as a powerhouse in college baseball. Johnson says the team’s success is rooted in a deep commitment to preparation, development, and accountability—traits that go far beyond athletic ability.
“We don’t just recruit great players. We recruit players who want to grow, compete, and win at the highest level,” Johnson explained. “LSU attracts those kinds of athletes because of what this place stands for. When you wear this jersey, you carry a legacy with you.”
That legacy includes six national championships and a long list of former Tigers who have gone on to excel in Major League Baseball. But for Johnson, the goal isn’t just to honor LSU’s past—it’s to build on it.
“There’s a standard here, and we don’t shy away from it,” he said. “Every player who walks into our locker room knows that we’re chasing championships every year. That’s the expectation, and that’s the challenge.”
Johnson also pointed to the support of LSU’s fanbase and the energy of Alex Box Stadium as key elements of the program’s strength. “There’s nothing like playing in front of our fans at The Box,” he said. “It’s a major league atmosphere in a college setting. The passion our fans bring pushes our players to give everything they have.”
In the ever-evolving world of college athletics, Johnson has also adapted to the new era of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) and the transfer portal, using both strategically to strengthen the roster. Yet, he remains grounded in fundamentals.
“At the end of the day, it’s still about development and chemistry,” he said. “You can bring in the most talented guys in the country, but if they don’t buy in to the team culture, it doesn’t work. That’s what we prioritize—team first.”
As the Tigers look ahead to another season filled with high expectations, Johnson remains focused and confident in the direction of the program.
“I believe LSU Baseball is the premier program in the country,” Johnson concluded. “And we’re going to continue proving that—day in and day out.”
