The Florida Gators enter the 2024–25 college basketball season with the ultimate target on their backs: defending national champions. Head coach Todd Golden has transformed the program into a powerhouse in just a short time, and now the Gators will look to repeat their March Madness magic with a retooled but still formidable roster.
Golden’s squad is built on a balance of returning veterans, talented transfers, and high-impact freshmen, giving Florida one of the deepest and most versatile lineups in the country. While the Gators lost a few key pieces from their championship run, their offseason additions and player development have them primed for another Final Four push.
At the guard spots, Florida boasts a backcourt that can rival any in the SEC. Senior guard Walter Clayton Jr., who was instrumental in last year’s title run with his scoring and poise in big moments, is expected to be the floor leader. He’ll be paired with transfer sharpshooter Zion Pullin, who brings both experience and a steady offensive presence. Together, they provide the kind of backcourt stability that championship teams need.
On the wing, sophomore Riley Kugel is set to take on a bigger role. Kugel’s athleticism and ability to create his own shot make him a dynamic scoring option. His development will be crucial for the Gators’ offensive success, especially in games where defenses key in on Clayton. Freshman standout Jayden Williams, a top-40 recruit, could also earn significant minutes as a spark plug off the bench.
Inside, Florida will continue to rely on its physicality and rebounding. Senior big man Micah Handlogten, who emerged as a defensive anchor last season, is expected to start at center. His shot-blocking and rim protection were key to Florida’s tournament dominance. Next to him, forward Alex Condon provides versatility, able to stretch the floor with his shooting while still holding his own in the paint. The frontcourt duo gives Florida a combination of size and skill that will cause problems for opponents across the SEC.
Off the bench, the Gators will have valuable depth. Freshman guard Tre Donaldson will compete for backup minutes at the point, while veteran forward Tyrese Samuel offers toughness and energy in the paint. With this bench unit, Florida won’t lose much intensity when rotating players, keeping the pressure on opponents for all 40 minutes.
