SO SAD: Atlanta Braves pitcher Charlie Morton, at 40 years old will not….see more

Atlanta Braves pitcher Charlie Morton, at 40 years old and nearing his 41st birthday, remains open to the idea of returning to Major League Baseball in 2025. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman recently reported that Morton, a veteran of 17 seasons, could consider another year on the mound, with a potential reunion with the Braves among his options. Bowman’s analysis highlights Morton’s enduring competitiveness, as well as the critical role family considerations may play in his decision.

Morton first debuted with the Braves in 2008 and rejoined the team as a free agent in 2021. Though his 2024 season reflected some decline from his peak years, Morton continued to provide valuable stability. His 30 starts and 165 innings were nearly identical to his 2023 performance, illustrating his reliability. Although his strikeout rate dipped and his home runs allowed increased, Morton showed improved control, reducing his walk rate. He did, however, experience a drop in fastball velocity, a common trend with aging pitchers, though his curveball spin rate remained elite. According to FanGraphs, Morton’s contributions were valued at 1.1 fWAR in 2024, solidifying him as a league-average starter.

While no longer a top-of-the-rotation option, Morton’s veteran presence could offer valuable depth, especially as the Braves navigate uncertainty with their pitching staff. Max Fried’s health remains in question, and Spencer Strider is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Should Morton decide to return, he could bolster a Braves rotation that may see significant change in 2025.

Beyond Morton, Bowman touches on other potential moves for the Braves this offseason, particularly regarding free agents and player options. A.J. Minter, another Atlanta veteran, may also be in line for a return, and management will likely weigh decisions about player options with a close eye on future roster needs.

With the 2024 offseason approaching, Morton’s status bears watching as the Braves and other MLB teams prepare for the hot stove season. Morton’s willingness to stay close to family will likely influence his ultimate decision. For now, the potential for Morton to extend his career remains open, and as November approaches, teams and fans alike will await further developments on Morton’s future in baseball.
