Tennessee players are speaking out about the officiating in their recent loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, raising concerns over what they believe were pivotal calls that influenced the outcome of the game. In a heated post-game interview, several Vols players expressed frustration over the officiating decisions that they felt were unfair and inconsistent, contributing to the team’s 34-24 defeat.

 

The most contentious issue centered around a series of penalties that seemed to disproportionately target Tennessee. Players specifically pointed to a questionable targeting call against one of their defensive backs, which resulted in an ejection, as a game-changing moment. The Vols also voiced displeasure over missed holding calls on Georgia’s offensive line, arguing that those infractions disrupted Tennessee’s defensive schemes and allowed the Bulldogs to gain critical yards at key moments.

 

“We were playing our hearts out, but it felt like we were fighting two opponents: Georgia and the refs,” said Tennessee linebacker Jalen McCullough. “The targeting penalty was tough, but there were other calls too—missed holds and stuff that they let slide. It felt like we were getting penalized for things that weren’t even happening.”

 

The frustration was echoed by quarterback Joe Milton, who lamented the inconsistency of the officiating throughout the game. “It’s hard to play when you don’t know what’s going to be called next. Despite the complaints, Heupel’s message to his team remained focused on self-improvement. “At the end of the day, we have to look at ourselves in the mirror,” he said. “There were opportunities we missed that we can control, and we have to do better. We can’t let the officiating be the reason we lose.”
