The men’s basketball program has officially announced the hiring of Steve Wright as an assistant coach, bringing aboard a respected leader with a strong background in player development, recruiting, and winning culture. Wright, a former standout college player and seasoned coach, is expected to play a key role in shaping the program’s future both on and off the court.

Head coach Kevin Willard expressed his excitement over the addition, emphasizing the experience and energy Wright brings to the coaching staff.

“Steve Wright is a tremendous addition to our staff,” Willard said in a statement. “He’s a proven developer of talent, a passionate teacher of the game, and a tireless recruiter. He brings the kind of competitive mindset and character that fits our culture perfectly.”

Wright joins the program following a successful stint as head coach at a prominent prep school, where he built one of the top high school basketball programs in the country. Under his leadership, the school produced several Division I athletes and earned national rankings. Prior to that, Wright served as an assistant at various collegiate programs, helping guide teams to postseason appearances and establishing strong recruiting pipelines in the Midwest and Southeast regions.

Known for his high basketball IQ and commitment to mentoring players, Wright has been widely respected in coaching circles for years. His reputation as a player’s coach stems from his ability to connect with athletes, challenge them to grow, and prepare them for success beyond the court.

Wright played collegiately at Bowling Green State University, where he was an All-MAC performer and led the team in scoring and assists during his junior and senior seasons. After college, he played professionally overseas and in the G-League before transitioning into coaching—a move that’s allowed him to channel his on-court experiences into impactful teaching.

“I’m honored and excited to join this program,” Wright said. “This is a special place with a winning tradition, and I’m grateful to Coach Willard for the opportunity. I can’t wait to get to work with our players and help them reach their full potential.”

Wright is expected to take a lead role in developing the team’s guards, implementing scouting strategies, and assisting with recruiting efforts nationwide. His addition comes at a key moment as the program prepares for an important offseason focused on roster development and building chemistry for the year ahead.

With Wright now in place, the coaching staff looks solidified and ready to make noise in the upcoming season. Fans and players alike can look forward to the fresh perspective and intensity that he brings to the hardwood.
