After a heartbreaking end to the 2024-25 season, Purdue head coach Matt Painter is focused on redemption—and he’ll have the tools to do it. The Boilermakers’ “Big 3” are officially returning for the 2025-26 campaign, reigniting championship hopes in West Lafayette.
Zach Edey may be off to the NBA, but Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, and Trey Kaufman-Renn—the trio that has formed the backbone of Purdue’s high-powered offense—are back for another run. Painter, entering his 21st season at the helm, made it clear during a press conference that expectations are higher than ever.
“We know what we’re capable of,” Painter said. “With the leadership and experience we’re bringing back, this team has a real chance to finish what we started.”
Purdue finished last season with a dominant regular-season record and a deep tournament run, but came up short in the Final Four. The return of Smith’s court vision, Loyer’s sharpshooting, and Kaufman-Renn’s interior versatility gives Painter a solid core to build around. The Boilermakers are also adding a strong recruiting class and key transfers that could provide depth and athleticism.
Still, Painter emphasized that returning talent alone won’t be enough. “There’s no shortcuts. We have to be better defensively and more consistent in key moments,” he said.
The Big Ten will again be stacked with competition, but with the “Big 3” leading the charge, Purdue has a legitimate shot at a national title. The Boilermakers are hungry, experienced, and determined to change the narrative.
“The goal is simple,” Painter said. “Cut down the nets in April.”
With their stars back and motivation at an all-time high, Purdue fans can dare to dream big for 2026.
