One of the top remaining uncommitted prospects in the Lone Star State is closing in on a decision. Four-star defensive back Jalen Mitchell, a rising senior out of Cedar Hill High School in Texas, has officially narrowed down his recruitment to three finalists: Texas, Texas A&M, and LSU. He also announced he will make his college decision on July 20.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound cornerback, is ranked as the No. 15 corner in the nation and No. 26 overall prospect in Texas, according to the 247Sports Composite. Known for his physicality, fluid footwork, and aggressive man coverage, Mitchell has been on the radar of college programs since his sophomore year. His top-three announcement comes after a whirlwind of spring visits and summer official visits.
The Texas Longhorns have long been viewed as the favorite, thanks to Mitchell’s strong relationship with defensive backs coach Terry Joseph and head coach Steve Sarkisian. Mitchell has visited Austin multiple times and was in attendance for the Longhorns’ spring game, where he reportedly came away impressed with the defensive scheme and player development.
Texas A&M, however, remains a serious contender. The Aggies have emphasized in-state recruiting under head coach Mike Elko, and Mitchell is a priority target in their 2025 class. He visited College Station in early June and spoke highly of the coaching staff’s energy and vision for his role in the secondary.
LSU rounds out the top three and offers the appeal of “DBU” status. The Tigers have a rich tradition of sending defensive backs to the NFL, and Mitchell has taken note. He visited Baton Rouge in late May and reportedly connected well with the Tigers’ defensive staff.
Mitchell plans to announce his commitment in a live-streamed ceremony at Cedar Hill’s auditorium, with teammates and family in attendance. His decision is expected to significantly impact the recruiting rankings for all three programs.
With July 20 circled on the calendar, fans and coaches alike will be watching closely as one of Texas’ top defensive talents gets ready to make his college future official.
