Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel met with the media following the No. 7 Volunteers’ 36-23 win at Vanderbilt, and he shared his thoughts on the team’s performance. Heupel was pleased with the Vols’ resilience and ability to adapt to the Commodores’ unique scheme.

 

“I’m proud of our team,” Heupel said. “We knew it was going to be a challenge. Vanderbilt does some unique things defensively, and they’re very sound in what they do. Our guys adjusted well, and we were able to make some plays when it mattered most.”

 

Heupel praised the play of quarterback Hendon Hooker, who threw for 156 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 48 yards. The Vols’ signal-caller has been one of the most consistent players in the country this season, and Heupel is grateful to have him leading the team.

 

“Hendon is a winner,” Heupel said. “He’s a guy who, no matter what’s happening in the game, he’s always going to compete at a high level. He’s got a great feel for the game, and he’s able to make plays with his legs and his arm.”

 

The Vols’ running game was also a key factor in the win, as Jabari Small and Jaylen Wright combined for 122 yards on the ground. Heupel was pleased with the way his backs ran the ball, particularly in the second half.

 

“We were able to establish the run game in the second half, which was big for us,” Heupel said. “Jabari and Jaylen both ran the ball well, and our O-line did a great job of blocking for them.”

 

Tennessee’s defense also played a crucial role in the win, holding Vanderbilt to just 321 total yards. The Vols’ D-line was particularly effective, with Byron Young and Omari Thomas combining for 3.5 sacks.

 

“Our defensive line played well,” Heupel said. “They were able to get pressure on the quarterback, which helped us get off the field on third down. Our linebackers and DBs also did a great job of supporting them and making plays when they needed to.”

 

As the Vols prepare to face off against Kentucky next week, Heupel is confident that his team will be ready for the challenge.

 

“We’ll enjoy this win tonight, but tomorrow we’ll get back to work,” Heupel said. “We’ve got a big game coming up next week against Kentucky, and we’ll need to be ready to go.”
