The Washington Commanders have strengthened their defensive line by signing veteran defensive tackle Byron Cowart, giving the team additional depth as training camp continues.
Cowart earned the opportunity after working out for Washington alongside seven other defensive free agents. The Commanders ultimately selected the former Maryland standout, who was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. �

The move comes at an important time for Washington’s defensive front. D.J. Davidson recently retired, following earlier retirements by veteran special-teamer Nick Bellore and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, leaving the Commanders needing additional depth. �

Cowart brings four years of NFL game experience, having appeared in 51 games with 21 starts, recording 67 tackles and 3.5 sacks during his career. He has previously spent time with the Patriots, Colts, Bears and Jets. �

Washington also announced corresponding roster moves, releasing guard Sala Aumavae-Laulu and safety Rob McDaniel. �

For the Commanders, this is less about making a splash and more about ensuring the defensive line has enough experienced bodies to get through training camp and into the preseason. Cowart will now have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot and prove he can contribute to Washington’s defensive
